How can they be rehearsing waltzes when I feel like I’m preparing for a funeral? I stand and pace the room, my mind chasing itself in circles. Run. Stay. Fight. Give in. Every option tastes bitter. I stop by the window, pushing the curtain aside. The night air is cool, brushing my face like a whisper. Beyond the palace walls, the world looks free, dark streets, flickering lanterns, open sky. Your little wife asked him to lift her there. Tavisha had ignored the whole incident; she sashayed across to the pole that one of our dancers quickly evacuated, saying, 'It's all yours, Principessa.' She huffs at her because she knows she will lose money if she doesn't dance, but Tavisha is my wife, and I am the MC President, so she does not have a choice. I tried hard to recall what happened the night of the ball. "That night, the witch gave me a gown and a pair of glass slippers. After I entered the palace, Prince Adrian spotted me right away and invited me to dance. He looked at me with such affection, like I was the only person in the room." Mira pressed on. "Then what?" I frowned. "Then the clock struck midnight. I was in a rush to leave, and one of the slippers fell off while I was running."

Before I could steer the conversation further, a bright, carrying voice sliced through the low hum of conversation, silencing the entire ballroom in an instant. "Ladies and gentlemen, the moment you've all been waiting for!" Princess Valerie's voice rang out from the raised dais, sharp and theatrical, her hands spread wide as though presenting a gift to the entire room. "The Royal Dance! Our esteemed Alpha King has graciously agreed to dance with not one, not two, but twelve of tonight's candidates. Let the music begin!"

Then prince Satchell bowed extending his right arm and asked, "May I have the pleasure of dancing with you?" Ives was shocked along with everyone. They hadn't dared to ask Ives on the dance because they knew his highness would kill them but prince Satchell was too daring. Ives was slightly drunk and smiled. Why doesn't he let taste his highness his own medicine? Ives smiled as he placed his hand on the prince's hand and said, "Sure."

The first dance of Daisie’s coming-of-age party was with her brother, Colton. The two of them danced in the center of the crowd, and she was shining like a star under the lights—they looked like the prince and princess of a fairy tale. After a dance, the lights in the hall dimmed all of a sudden. Nobody knew why, but they thought it was all arranged. At that moment, a silhouette approached Daisie. He stopped behind Daisie and extended his hand humbly and politely. “Your Royal Highness Princess Goldmann, may I have the following dance?”

After only a minute or so, they returned to their seats. Once they were seated, the nobles filled the floor. They were allowed to dance with each other, but not us. The candidates’ dances were reserved for the princes alone, unless permission was explicitly given by the royal family. The order of the princes’ dances was chosen at random, but by the end, each prince would have danced with every candidate. Only the servants and the princes knew the order. The servants weaved through the crowd of us girls searching for the first dancers. Julian, however, ignored it all by approaching me.

It never does. Across the courtyard, the prince reclined on his cushions like a man auditioning for a painting. The kind of opulence you only earn by being born in the right house was draped on everything he touched: gold-thread pillows, cords of pearls, the amused attention of a hundred eyes. A masked dancer bent to him and he barely looked. Boredom in a crown is still boredom. And then the floor changed. Noise broke like glass. Not because the drums cracked or the flutes fell out of tune but because the air leaned forward. A movement that didn’t belong cut across the choreography. I felt it before I identified it.

They broke apart with the Dark Prince giving Kyle a deadly glare. The dinner was filled with embarrassing stories, emotional speeches and most of all vigorous and energetic dancing. Bethany did not leave the dance floor after she ate dinner. She simply didn't want to stop dancing. In that process, she pulled whoever she could onto the dance floor to join her in doing some crazy dance moves. Princess Aeval laughed and danced with her beloved friends enjoying the night with them. It was mostly her side of the family as Beth didn't have any family members left.

Unused to it and unprepared for it, I lost balance, and fell, but he grabbed my waist, smiling and making it all seem like it was a part of the dance. Butterflies let loose in my belly, and he spun me around a few more times; by the time we were at the end of the hall, close to the counter filled with all kinds of drinks; I was pressed to him closer than ever. “That was… crazy.” I said, with a little laugh. “You just made an awful dancer look like a great one.” I made a spinning motion with my finger kn delight, and he laughed. “Do you know how many dances a King has to endure, starting from his days as a Prince?” He asked, and I shook my head.
