Nothing had changed. She still looked the same. Flawless as ever. I stared at it for a moment, then exited. I didn’t know why I searched her name after that. Maybe curiosity. The profile came up quickly. A verified account with millions of followers. I hesitated for a second before tapping on the profile picture. A story had been posted a minute ago. The image appeared and everything inside me went still. It wasn’t even a full picture. Just a partial shot. A restaurant table.

"Join me, come on. You never know, you could find someone entertaining." I rolled my eyes but couldn't help it. Soon enough, we were both swiping away, laughing at crazy bios, silly pictures, and the occasional pretentious quote. Sophia playfully elbowed me. "Oh, look at this one. He claims to be a CEO who climbs mountains for fun. Please." I smiled, taking her phone to examine. "That's. ambitious." We were continuing to make our jokes about the matches when a profile came along that brought me to a halt.

I'm not sure I can get close to him even as a friend, because he doesn't seem like someone easy to approach. I checked his I*******m profile, and there wasn't a single photo of a woman there, only photos of himself and some other random pictures, and all of them were black and white. There seemed to be no color in his life and I could see that he hadn't posted a new picture for a long time, his last post was 2 years ago and it was just a picture of two birds in the rain. We followed each other after chatting for quite a while, he turned out to be quite active because he replied to my message quickly, even though the message felt very cold but at least he was willing to respond to me.

The other day, he had pieced it all together (social media wasn't his thing:⁠,⁠-⁠). He created a fake username. Does captainZ_1001 count? Her profile was the first that appeared on his feed. Photos of her having fun with her friends, photos of her body wrapped against a tiny girl, they both grinned in the photo, and for a second, he wondered who the little girl was.

Everybody knows Jamie is low profile, he never let anyone take his picture, so I surely expected a F******k account without a profile picture. With the name JL Peyton, initials for Jamie Lee Peyton, I am certain that this is Jamie’s account. I tap into his account and look around. As expected by my smallest hope, his profile is all locked up, not being a friend of his makes me unable to discover more of him on his profile page, but I know he probably never liked any fan pages or joined any group on social media platforms, so it is useless for me to see his profile page anyway.

Marcus typed something into his phone and handed it to Kira. She scrolled through the profile. Sophia Mitchell. The bio said Travel enthusiast. Dog lover. Living life. But there were no pictures of her. Just scenic backgrounds. Sunsets, coffee cups, city skylines, food. Not a single human face. “Marcus, this is weird.” “It’s not weird. She just values her privacy.” Kira clicked on the profile details. The account had been created four months ago. She showed it to her brother. “When did you say you met her?”

For a second I caught myself wishing it had gotten lost—as if that somehow would magically make the profile vanish along with it—but I quickly found it beneath a scratch piece of paper. It all felt odd, like I was a detective of some sort, as I logged in and opened my profile. It was familiar and yet different enough to be almost creepy. Everything was about me, but I hadn't done any of it. Even my picture at the top of the screen looked like a different person smiling back at me. I need to change this picture if I want this profile to go anywhere, I thought to myself. I looked far to innocent and happy to be on a dating site. "Instincts," Shelly replied with a shrug. The profile opened displaying Adam in various pictures on his power bike, his doctor uniform though those ones were few. "Adam is a badass guy with a power bank? Color me shocked!" Kiara exclaimed not hiding the surprise evident on her face.
