That was somehow worse than denial. “Is it ours? All four?” I asked. “Yes,” she said again. My brain stopped cooperating. Jaxon rubbed a hand over his face. “We had a whole emotional cave journey about it.” “There were rituals,” Calder added dryly. “Great powers,” Maddox said. “Trauma,” Jaxon continued.

There was a time when Quinn finally agreed to a video call, and I saw a hickey on her neck.

Do you have any final words?" Subject 47 looks at the crowd. At Emma. "I'm sorry. For everything. I didn't want anyone hurt. I just wanted to stay enhanced. To stay special. I thought I was making a trade. Information for salvation. I was wrong. I was selfish. I was desperate." She pauses. "If you find a cure. A way to stop the degradation. Don't let it corrupt you. Don't let fear make you into what I became. Stay strong. Stay together. Stay good."

Larsson Ashcroft is overseeing. Cassian's name was in the file index. So was Emilia's. My hand went to my mouth. Cassian wasn't just involved. He was made. A prototype. That's what they meant by Project Ashfall. Cassian was the answer. A video played. Leo stood over a child, wide-eyed, no more than ten. "Subject 7 has shown remarkable mental growth. But emotional regulation is a liability." The camera cut— That child was Cassian.
