I watched a documentary on serial killers, and I still remember the psychologist on the show saying that serial killers can believe their alternate reality so much that they can pass a lie detector test because their alternate reality becomes their actual reality. The psychologist said everyone has that ability, not to the extent of serial killers, but it can be trained into your psyche. I actually wrote a paper on it in high school psychology.
