Sam had procured much better accommodations in the last few months since he had been working steadily at the local school district. Rather than hovelling in a burned out trailer home, as he had started his new life, he now lived in an abandoned shotgun a few miles outside of town. It was apparent when he moved in that the last squatters did not care about the property nearly as much as he did, and while he didn’t concern himself with the modern conveniences of the twenty-first century, he did appreciate that there were no holes in the roof and the fireplace worked.

Relief rippled through me, but Chelsea wasn’t done. “Hello? You deaf or somethin’?” she snapped, finger flicking at me. I just stared at him, trying to understand what kind of person could look so calm while discussing the wreckage of someone else's life. "What is this?" My voice was barely a whisper now as I stared at the stack of papers warily. "You've been publicly rejected," he said. "Stripped of your pack, your title, your mate, and every possession you ever owned. You have no family, no friends, no money, and definitely no place to go. If you walk out of this hospital right now, you'll be homeless, pregnant, and alone in a world where your deepest trauma was broadcast to millions of people."

This belly distended like a balloon about to burst doesn't make people horny, even if I'm naked. I put my hands in my pockets and counted my remaining money. "I fucked her, man! serves the slut right too, she put up a lotta fight too, but I ain't taking that shit from her" Jason replied, laughing like a mad man.

Shelters are mostly made up of homeless men. They always looked at Blair with wild eyes like hungry wolves. Although Blair repeatedly told them she was pregnant, no one believed her. Blair shivers when she remembers how in a shelter, she was tried by some homeless who wanted to rape her. After the truck left, Blair immediately went to the cashier and paid the bill with her change. She grabbed a plastic bag filled with mineral water and some bread and walked out of the supermarket. Someone accidentally bumped into her at that moment, and Blair fell down.

“I hope that’s not your big news. Because that’s old story.” Opposite me, Lorenzo was trying so hard not to burst out laughing. Adrian narrowed his eyes. “Fine. I have something better.” He leaned in. “Are you aware her friend threw her out of her house? Laura is homeless.” Lorenzo raised a hand. “Actually, I know that already. She called me.” My head snapped toward him. “Why did she call you?” “She was stranded. Needed a place to stay. Obviously I turned her down.” I scoffed. “The audacity of that girl.”

Gabriel says beside me, his dark skin going remarkably pale. A vast field of black and blue tarps sit in deep mud, propped up on shabby poles and sticks. They’re supposed to be tents, but they look more like the squalid dwellings often built by those experiencing homelessness in large cities. The ramshackle structures are on the verge of collapse, and there is no sign of any food or fresh water. The stench is incredible, and it’s immediately apparent that there is no one governing this place.
