“Let the game begin. Just don’t cry when the board flips. I will prevail and take you back to our orchard, mummy.” A quick, hot tear run hastily down my face. I didn’t bother to wipe it. I let it be. The real queens have real feelings. That’s how they survived. The old queen stared back at me with the blind faith of carved ivory. I didn’t have the heart to tell her she was not in the game anymore. And me? I was tired to be a king pleaser.

"Do not provoke me, old woman. I am Caesar Augusto, Re de Cross and your god." Mother Cross chuckled, humorlessly. "Do not forget yourself, Caesar. You are no god of mine." "Really? So you think I have no power over you? You think I do not rule you?" There was a small pregnant silence. "A queen is the most important piece in the game of chess." And right on cue, Jessica walked in. She was dressed in a blood-red gown, adorned in gold. She looked like prophecy fulfilled. Caesar inhaled sharply. "There she is. My queen," he said.

Bart and I cheered them both but eventually Joanne won. Conquain was an interesting game that I particularly liked a lot. It was a game where you had to form a basic strategy by combining a specific card type such as three queens or a run of the same symbol like the black circle. After three small rounds I had it figured out and was able to win six of the nine games. Joanne was impressed with my quick learned skills and challenged me to a round for just us. Conor and Bart watched us with fascination as we played three hands. I won two of the three hands. Joanne admitted defeat and my ego perked up a notch.

“Queen you fought so well in that game. One versus four only with the Orange. I want to learn from you.” “Queen, I have learned one of your tricks. I have discovered that every time you cooperate with an unfamiliar team, you first see how they operate before joining the battle.”

The three cards could be anything, but it is usually a queen and two low-numbered cards placed side by side face down on a table. The queen is the only card that matters and you have to find it. The dealer starts every game with the cards in his hands, face down, cradling the edges of the card with his fingers. Two in one hand, the queen on the bottom and the ten above it, and a single five of diamonds on the other hand. He then throws down the queen, face down, and throws the other cards around it. It's easy to see where the queen has landed and follow it as the dealer moves it around with the other cards. A friend of the dealer bets on where the queen lies and gets it wrong.

When I’m not. These women probably ran the whole supernatural world. While the men were always roaring and yelling in each other’s face about who is who. I know women are the key players in that game of chess. If the queen is protected. Everything is going well and you can make great moves. And when shit goes south, the queen protects the king. I’m guessing this is where you get your warriors and foot soldiers for protection. “The one and only,” Daciana smirks proudly. “Wait, I have heard that he was with someone. The daughter of that small pack’s alpha.” She stares at me with widened eyes. “It makes sense now. I have never seen someone as pretty as her.”

Nevertheless, it was the only option we had, and we would have to play by the rules if we wanted to stand a chance. As he explained the rules of the upcoming fight, my mind began to race with strategies and plans. The only way to win the war was to take down the Alpha of the opposing pack, and that meant all eyes would be on Alpha Zarion. The weight of that responsibility pressed heavily on my shoulders as well. But this is the fight between Lunas—between Queens. How could a Queen take down another King? Of course. The answer is simple and is freaking in front of me. I have to go through the Queen first.

Elyria’s POV I was almost done with queen training for the day when a messenger arrived with a note for me from my parents and the royal council. They were calling for an emergency meeting. “That’s odd…” I muttered under my breath. It was unlike them to do something like that. As far as I knew, everything had been finalized. The wedding would happen first then the coronation would follow shortly after. I needed a break after all the studying I had been doing but I guess there was no time for that as I saw the guard still standing there, waiting to escort me to the throne room. It showed the urgency of the situation. This only heightened my curiosity.
