I huddle at a corner of the pit and try to keep myself warm; my “pit mate” on the other hand simply lies down in the middle and rests in the rain. The freezing rain soon begins to take its toll as I start to shiver, I begin rubbing my chest trying to keep myself warm till one of our guards drops two cloaks in front of me “Can’t have you getting sick before a battle” he says and walks away. I wrap myself in the cloak and throw one to my pit mate who was fast asleep. The cloak lands on his face and wakes him up, he gets up for a while and snarls at me like a dog, then he wrap

“Romantic, aren’t you? Too bad Daisy’s already marked by me. She never looked at you, Andrew. Never will. So go back to Elinor. She’s all you’ve got left. You killed her father— when that old man rises as a ghost-wolf to take revenge, don’t say I didn’t warn you.” Clang！ The sound of silver slamming into stone shattered the air. Sparks flew as Andrew’s blade struck the pillar behind Ryan. I didn’t wait to hear more. I ran downstairs and made my way to the bar.

Arden learned to be tired without being afraid of closing his eyes. I pressed my fingers over the brand the crescent had written into me and felt an ordinary pulse. There was a man in the trees with a camera who would sell this chapter to someone later and call it human interest with teeth. There was a rogue on the ridge who would hear in his sleep the way the Holdfast had learned to move like a body that did not need him to tell it how. There was a woman in a room with chains who would wake to the way air changes when a village decides not to be ashamed of its mothers. “Secrets in the dark,” I said to the water. “Not so secret now.” The creek answered with its one sermon: go on.

CHAPTER FOUR FALSE ACCUSATIONS. Helena walked past her, back toward the party. Back toward Isla and the twins. Back toward Marcus and the life they'd built. Back toward the family she preferred. Lyra stood alone in the small room, shaking. Every part of her hurt. Every breath felt like swallowing glass. Her hands trembled. Her knees felt weak. The door opened again. For one stupid, hopeful second, Lyra thought her mother had come back to apologize. To say she didn't mean it.

Day Two arrived with rain. Not the gentle kind that nurtured growth. The cold, vicious kind that felt like the sky was trying to wash something away sin, perhaps, or memory, or the last traces of hope. Julian woke to the sound of it hammering against the corrugated metal roof of the shack, a rhythm that made his bones ache in ways that had nothing to do with the curse. His transformation was accelerating. He could feel it now not just in his bones, but in his blood. The cage was getting smaller. The animal inside was getting hungrier.
