A black feather stretched across my shoulder blade. For a moment I just stared at it. A tattoo? No. That wasn’t possible. My hands shook slightly as I grabbed the hem of my shirt and pulled it over my head. Then I turned fully toward the mirror. My breath left me in a soft gasp. My entire back was covered in them. Black wings. Not real wings. But something that looked almost as if they could be. Every feather was etched perfectly across my skin, layered and detailed in a way that made them look alive. The dark feathers shimmered faintly with streaks of iridescent blue that caught the morning light.

The closer I come, I want to touch it. Visions of the wings wrapping around me, never allowing me to escape, consume my thoughts. I look up at Raquel and shiver, not understanding how a tattoo could be so powerful.
