“And she told you to come home before dark.” Nia froze. The command pulsed. Subject Zero’s body arched violently, almost throwing me off the table. Anya pinned one shoulder. I grabbed the final silver thread. Nia whispered, “Before dark.” Then she turned. Not toward us. Toward the table. Her red-black eyes cleared to gold. “Mama,” she said. Subject Zero’s head turned toward the sound. For one breath, the whole underground chamber seemed to stop. The face on the table changed.
