“Not just the queens. Upperclass vamps too. But yeah, the four at the top? They’re the prize patrol. Rules are simple: Rankings update monthly. Points for academics, extracurriculars, ‘social integration’—that’s code for not freaking out around fangs—and whatever mysterious crap the algorithm spits out. Seraphina built the system herself. AI-driven, pulls from campus cams, health scans, even social media if you’re dumb enough to post.” I pulled out my phone, tapped the Bloodmate app that had auto-installed overnight. My profile stared back: Nico Black, 21st, with a progress bar at 45%. Below it, a breakdown—endurance (high, probably from the car wreck survival), adaptability (medium), “intri

Marcus said, his voice hollow. The giant translucent leaderboard still hovered in the sky, its data now stark and terrifying. CURRENT PLAYERS: 10 NPC SURVIVAL RATE: 0.00% But the Life Points column told the real story. Most of them had taken a hit. Marcus’s own points sat at a grim 187, his name pulsing a weak, warning yellow. Others flickered in the red. And then there were the two outliers. KIERA VANCE: 2,415 LP JAX: 2,408 LP

I'm born with a congenital heart condition. But when my illness flares up, my longtime boyfriend, Zeke Fulton, doesn't try his best to save me. On the contrary, he forces me to sign over my shares while I'm in agony. Then, he stands by and watches as the pain rips through me. I end up dying on that hospital bed. Thankfully, I'm given a second chance at life. I'm reborn on the very last day of filling out college applications. This time, I don't fall for Zeke's sweet talk. I turn my back on him and run straight into the arms of my childhood friend, Hugo Lodge. Hugo wraps me up in his embrace, his lips brushing against the side of my neck. He says, "Elisa, come to Joslin University with

At the very top: Moore / Calder — 1 Directly beneath it: Vire / Talbot — 2 Nyx stopped halfway down the staircase. “Well,” she murmured. “That escalated quickly.” Students gathered beneath the display, whispering as the rankings pulsed and rearranged. Territory control points from yesterday’s simulation had already been converted into a formal metric. Briarcrest had turned their victory into currency. Alaric appeared beside her on the steps. “You’re staring,” he said. Nyx tilted her chin toward the display. “They installed a leaderboard overnight.” Alaric studied it quietly.

And then, just like fate wanted me to suffer, the loudspeaker crackled to life. "We'd like to congratulate our newest student, Sienna Cross, for achieving the highest overall score in our placement assessments. That includes A+ results across all tested subjects. We're excited to welcome her into our academic community." The hallway erupted into a soft wave of oohs and murmurs. I stood there like a statue while the world moved around me. Highest score. That was my record. My name is on the wall. My silent little legacy. And she just... waltzed in and stepped all over it in her shiny loafers and pretty smile.

"Pack status — which you're born into, can't change. Ability scores — monthly assessments, public, updated to your profile. And social standing — which is the complicated one because it's determined by the algorithm." "What algorithm," I said. "The app's algorithm," she said. "It tracks engagement. Profile views, mentions, shares, the specific quality of how often your name appears in the academy's social ecosystem." She held the laptop. "Which means The Ranking rewards visibility. And visibility rewards the people who already have it." I held my food. "So it compounds," I said.

Chase Lister, my junior in university, spread his arms wide, firmly shielding me behind him. He frowned and looked at Mom and Dad with disgust. "I've never seen parents as shameless as you two!" he shouted. "Why should you sacrifice one child's life for the sake of the other? "What's so good about Jane? She's just a useless, spoiled trust-fund brat! How can you be so biased? She doesn't even hold a candle to Yvonne! You two must be completely blind to trade a diamond for a piece of glass!"
