I need to process and just have a minute to breathe. I turn the books the right way up and try to slide them back into the shelves silently when the title of the first catches my eye and stops me pushing it in. It’s a psychology textbook about his personality condition and I impulsively tip it sideways to let the pages flip open for a quick nosey. That part of me that is eager to know more about what it means in terms of him as a person kicking in. I scan the words eagerly, desperate for more insight.

She is far superior to you in every way. And there are too many paragraphs that could explain that sentence," he snorted. "And what about you? Love? What kind of love do you have for me? It's not love. Nor obsession. But greed. You can look up the meaning of greed in the dictionary yourself."

Lucy I stare at Rhett, the way he relaxes in the chair. When he fluffs the book like a damn newspaper, I realize what he’s reading. A special edition signed copy of my favorite vampire smut. One that’s crawling with page after page of dirty vampire sex. “Oh my God, stop reading that book.”

VOLUME TWO: FLUX: Flight Jack sprinted down the hall and skidded to a stop. The three men behind him copied his movements. They held their rifles at the ready in every direction, protecting him from all sides. He pushed his ear to the door and listened. A few muffled coughs came from within. He summoned fire into the palms of his hands, just hot enough to warp and melt the metal handle. Once it softened, he slammed his shoulder against the door and it burst open under his weight.

Why don’t you make up your mind! Standing up, knocking most of the thick globs from my cloak, I looked to Fluffy, whose hair was standing up on his neck. He backs up to cover me with his body. Looking over at him, there was no movement in the trees and the bushes were completely still. “It’s probably a chipmunk or something,” I whispered to calm myself. Surely that is all this was. My hand went to Fluffy’s back, feeling the stiffness of his body. It was anything but a chipmunk. The days had been too quiet. Something was going to break me out of my sweet solitude with Creed. It was inevitable.

Like my mom did toward the end. My chest hurts. I rub it. I’m not used to being empty-handed. If I don’t have a hammer or a wrench, I’ve got a ball or my hand grip. I don’t like all this fucking walking. And it’s too quiet. And there are too many fucking birds. I stretch my legs a bit and catch up to Flora. She’s panting harder. Her skin’s glistening, and her pink top is damp and sticking to her skin. I let her scent fill my nose and soothe my circling thoughts.

“He never appreciated me. I did everything for him, and he just threw me away.” I listened, nodding sympathetically, while inside, I relished every bitter word. “It sounds like you’ve been through a lot,” I said, my tone soothing. “But now you have a chance to start fresh.” Flora’s eyes sparkled with newfound enthusiasm. “Yes! Thank you so much, Anne.” I smiled, belittling her enthusiasm in my mind. “Mention not, Flora.” As Flora continued to praise me and our newfound alliance, I let her words wash over me, amused by her desperation. She was licking my feet, practically groveling for this opportunity, and I savored every moment.
