I took a seat at the table, writing down thoughts and ideas on various watch strategies-something we could propose to the council next week. With new information coming in every other day from different watch stations, it's a constant endeavor for the Warriors and Fighters to stay one step ahead of the demons. Determining where they've been previously spotted, the number of sightings, and the possibility of battle breaking out at any moment, the process can be overwhelming.

There was something in the presence of him that made everyone around him seem diminished, uneasy. I should have looked away. I knew that. But I couldn't. They are laughing and joking around like they haven't a care in the world. A song starts playing over the PA system and everyone goes to attention. The leaders of the Chosen begin filling out onto the stage and take a seat as the announcer begins his speech about the reaping. Over the years my family has always watched the reaping. It was one of the few things that we got to watch other than the news. I knew that my parents and grandparents would be gathered around the television watching and waiting to see what would happen to me.

It was the ultimate expression of the Grey Sorrow's philosophy.

And right in the middle of it all—he waited. Jax. They called him Reaper—because death followed him like a shadow, a silent, inevitable companion. The instant his eyes, obsidian chips of ice, sliced through the noise and landed on me, the world shrank to that frozen moment. My breath caught, a jagged shard in my throat. I knew—without a doubt—that I was standing in the eye of a storm, and I was the fragile thing about to be torn apart.

Kaen came near me and noticed that I was watching his brother. "He's an introverted Reaper, he's wearing eyeliner encase you couldn't tell and he also likes to cut himself and watch it heal. Sometimes he cuts too deeply and he passes out from blood loss momentarily, but always comes back healed," he told me frankly and I furrowed my brow.
