That was not what caught my attention. I stood up slowly letting go of my fathers hand as my eyes moved down the machines that were checking his vitals. There was a shiny black disc stuck to the side of the main machine it was no larger than a coin. There was a red light blinking on it every three seconds. It was a high-definition camera. I felt like I had been punched in the chest it took my breath away. Julian was not just tracking the Maybach. He was not just relying on Sarah to tell him what was happening. He was there in that room watching us on his screens.

I watch her from across the room and I don't say a word. Because what do you say when the woman you love is becoming something you don't fully recognize? What do you say when her veins run black at the edges and her eyes go distant and you know she's touching power that has nothing to do with the living world? You say nothing. You watch. You stay close. That's all. The Reaper has her in the corner of the training ground again. Both hands. Both of them just standing there while death moves between them like a current. Aurora's breathing is different now. Slower than it should be. Too controlled. Like something else is regulating it for her.

I open my eyes, and bring out the Eye of the Reaper, which represents the watchful gaze of Death, symbolizing my ability to see and interact with the realm of the deceased, but nothing happens again. I stifle my frustration, but a scream breaks from me as I chant

he winks at me as we walk up to the next room. "The green door is for aftercare products. I'll be around after each time we exit the Arena, but you are welcome to come in here anytime and grab anything you need. I'll order a bunch of products every month, so they don't run out. Then the door to the warehouse swung open. Decker Kane, the Reaper King, stood at the entrance with his skull mask on and his hand through a person's scalp with his fingers pushing out of their eye sockets. A wet, sucking sound echoed as Decker ripped his hand free, the body crumpling down to the floor. He stepped over it, wiping his gloved fingers on his thigh, leaving dark smears.

He didn’t say the name with love, that’s for sure. “I am.” Hunter nodded hesitantly. “How is Collin a reaper? What are reapers exactly?” Callie asked. “Reapers are kind of like special agents. Trained to deal with combat and other things. Reapers are normally sent out in groups to bring in the people on the list.” “They abduct people?” Callie’s eyebrow shifted up. “Kind of.” He nodded. “What do they do to the people they capture?” I asked hesitantly. “I don’t know.” Hunter replied, “Reapers are required to work on orders, no questions asked.”

In its place was a flickering, black-and-white icon shaped like a closed circle. [PROTOCOL IDENTIFIED: RECYCLE] [STATUS: INITIALIZING SYSTEM SCRUB] [TARGET: SECTOR 77-OBSIDIAN] "What does it mean?" Leo asked, stepping back from the throne. He looked at Kael’s pixelated silhouette on the peripheral screen. "What is it recycling?" "We are, Leo," The Admin murmured. The blue waveform dipped, Kael’s digital soul processing the logic with a speed that felt like a death knell. "I am reading the metadata buried in the script. This is not an attack. This is maintenance. The Watchers... they don't see Rebirth City as a sovereign state. They see us as a fragmented server."

To be honest, I had seen it so often that it didn't surprise me anymore. Sure enough, Hailey started listing my crimes. "All I did was give him a watch. How dare you threaten him? Apologize to him right now, or I'm going to demote you!" Without waiting for my response, she dialed Jaxon's number and put the call on speaker. I could barely say a word before he started his wounded act. "I'm the one who should apologize, Ms. Miller. I shouldn't have accepted your gift if it was going to make Mr. Chase so mad. I'll return the watch. Please just tell Mr. Chase to stop targeting me at work."

They ran anyway, breathless though they didn’t need breath. The reaper’s scythe slashed again, carving through smoke and bone. The Wraith howled, splitting apart, dragged back into the cracks it had torn in the Veil. The air sealed shut with a thunderclap. Silence fell. Avery pressed against the nearest wall, gasping. Their hands shook violently. “What the hell was that—what the hell was that?” The reaper planted their scythe into the ground and leaned on it, eyes burning with cold fury. “That was the mess you made.”

“You are just figuring this out?” Reaper shook his head and took a step towards me. “We are getting off topic. Just know I have my reasons.” He pulled his hair with his hands before pacing the small room. “I can’t have more deaths on my conscious or else I will never get her back.” He muttered under his breath. I was brought back to the present when I knock pounded on the front door before the voice of one of Allister’s men told me it was time.
