I unclenched my fists. The song changed. The heater hummed. I closed my eyes. For ten minutes, there were no business deals, no threats, no lies. I must have drifted off because I jumped when I heard his seatbelt click. My eyes snapped open. Reaper was sitting up, checking his watch. The ten minutes were up. He rubbed his hand over his face and checked the time. Then he looked at me in the rearview mirror. “Feeling better?” I nodded slowly. “Yeah. A little.”

The room was quiet except for the monitoring equipment and Phoenix's occasional notation. Three minutes passed. Then five. "I'm at the location," Reaper said. His voice was the slightly different register it took when he was operating partially within the dimensional layer. Present but elsewhere simultaneously. "Good," Voss said. He leaned forward slightly. "The self-check mechanism is on the archive's exterior surface. You'll perceive it as a recurring pulse. Tell me when you can perceive it."
