"If the core stops turning, we lose the gravity-well. We lose everything!" The Static-Reapers Arrive As the Earth began its fusion ignition, the Sink at the edge of the sector took notice. Out of the Absolute Zero, the Reapers appeared. They weren't ships. They were enormous, spindly needles of "Solid Cold"-beings resembling frozen lightning bolts. They didn't fire weapons; they simply floated toward the Earth, and wherever their shadow passed, all motion halted. Birds froze mid-air, falling like stones. The "Seed-Walkers" in the nurseries turned into emerald statues.

Because the name Reaper said was someone we'd buried. Someone we'd watched die. Someone whose funeral I had attended and whose grave I had stood over and whose loss I had carried for three years. "That's not possible," Eva whispered. "I know," Reaper said. "But it's true."

Chapter 41: The Third Eye ​The sky didn't just darken; it screamed. ​The sound of a thousand metallic wings vibrated through the humid air of Life Zero. The Reapers—sleek, black drones shaped like mechanical wasps—descended in a suffocating cloud. Their red optical sensors flickered like a swarm of angry stars, locking onto the silver heat radiating from Julian’s skin. ​"Stay behind me!" Julian roared. ​He slammed his fists together, and a massive dome of silver light erupted, a shield so bright it carved the shadows out of the jungle. But the Reapers didn't crash into it. They hovered, their mechanical stingers extending, pulsing with a disruptive blue frequency.

The Reaper's Last Mission Long ago, reapers in this world put a balance between life and death. Bringing the souls of the living to the world of the dead. And those who had a sinful life but had a reformed soul at their last breath on Earth, were given another chance to go back to the Earth and live the life they deserved rather than go straight to the ‘No Returned Place’. To receive this second chance, they must fulfill a duty, an act of service to help the Earth be a better place for the living. That is to be a reaper and reap the souls that shouldn’t no longer stay on the earth.

Boiler rooms had always seemed suspicious to me and having a monster lurking down there didn't make it any better at that moment. I looked at Reese, who was watching the darkness, but relaxed. Suddenly the same sounds came from his coat pocket with which he had already lured the Spuma to the Grim Reaper. Then everything happened very quickly. A scratch on the stairs, something big and blue rushed into the corridor, heading straight for Reese. The emerging growl was interrupted by a bang. It didn't yelp or make any other noise as it fell to the ground and slid right up to Reese's feet. It was just dead. As suddenly as it appeared, so suddenly its life had come to an end.

What could it hurt, after all? "I am a Reaver," I purred, my voice low and smooth. Roxy's eyes widened, a flicker of surprise dancing across her face. I was certain she had stumbled upon the chapters detailing my kind in the book she'd been reading. Three entire chapters were devoted to Reavers, and they were nestled near the beginning of the book. Given that she was now halfway through, I assumed she had already devoured those particular pages.

Looking onto the figure of the giant that seemed to embody death itself, Mane chuckled wordlessly and said, “Hello, Reaper.”
