I said softly, trying to keep my voice steady, to wrap my words in calm even while my heart splintered beneath the surface.
“But… is it true?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. “Did that lady die because her mate didn’t want her?”
The weight of his question hung between us like fog. I pressed my lips together, fighting the instinct to shield him from the truth. Then, slowly, I nodded. My eyes dropped to the floor, unwilling to let him see the sadness flickering behind them.
“Yes,” I murmured. “But that won’t be me. I have a reason to stay alive.” I placed a hand over his, grounding both of us. “I have you, Kael. You’re the reason I keep going.”
