It was far too old and much too sacred to abuse it. He flipped it to the back few pages and saw that it was the story of Queen Rebecca, and how she came to be. He read it slowly because it was a story that he thought that he knew, but apparently he did not know everything, and he found it so emotional for some reason. He thought maybe it was just the beautiful way that it had been written, but that wasn't really it.

Words like these seemed straight out of a melodramatic novel, where a gullible male protagonist got easily manipulated. Vance appeared to fit that role perfectly. She could almost guess what Vance and his friends were thinking. "Oh, Catherine is so considerate and understanding." Please—all she desired was to sit through this flight in peaceful silence, without any further disturbances from them. Yet Catherine seemed determined to make that impossible, as she turned her head once again and called out, "Rebecca, what are you reading there?" "Just something to pass the time," Rebecca replied dismissively, closing the book. "A French book? You can understand it? Cool!" Catherine exclaimed.

A suitcase. Michelle blinked. The sight of it made her chest tighten. Rebecca wasn’t just here for dinner or a stolen hour. She was staying. Rebecca’s lips curled in a self-satisfied smile as she glanced around the house, her gaze lingering on the framed photographs of Michelle’s late parents. She gave a faint snort of amusement before tossing her long curls over her shoulder. “Evening, Michelle,” she said sweetly, though the mockery in her tone was unmistakable. Michelle didn’t answer. She simply wiped her hands on a towel and stepped aside as Rebecca brushed past her, trailing the scent of expensive perfume.

Rebecca was the first person I noticed the moment I walked in, the woman that had invaded my dreams and mind. The first and last time I had seen her before she walked into my study had been at my wedding. She was just a little teenager back then, a bright little blonde girl who looked like the brand ambassador for the color pink. Her father had tried to introduce her to me, but her eyes were fixed on my wife's glass heels, she didn't spare me a glance. My late wife had found her cute and couldn't stop talking about her even though Rebecca barely said a word to her or even looked at her too.

She quickened her pace. Inside, Jessica was still sprawled on her bed, earbuds in. Faith was asleep, curled up like a comma. No one else was packing. Then Rebecca emerged from the bathroom, face fully beat, hair laid, perfume trailing behind her. She strolled to Jessica’s bed and smirked. “Finally. I’m leaving this dirty doom.” Her voice dripped with satisfaction. “God, I can’t be any happier. Imagine sharing a room with your enemy.” She flipped her hair. “I can’t believe I survived this scholarship dorm.”
