Rebecca The rest of the afternoon was filled with client calls and coaching some of the new staff on various complex accounting principles. By the end of the day Rebecca was beat and could think of nothing better than a hot bath. She stood, turning and walking to the file cabinet at the back of her office where the roses sat. She leaned over and breathed in deeply, the sweet smell filling up her senses and reminding her of beauty and innocence. “They’re beautiful.” She turned and smiled at Jason. “Yes they are. I thought they might be from you.”

But the scene she had expected did not happen. Rebecca did not break down. She did not shout. She did not cover her face and run away. Instead, she exerted a little force and calmly withdrew her hand from Catherine’s grasp. She did not even look at the ivory silk gown or the carefully arranged expression of guilt. Her gaze passed over Catherine and settled on Yanxi’s arrogant face. “Are you finished?” Rebecca’s voice was light. Yet there was something in it that had been tempered in cold water and years of silence—quiet, steady, and impossible to bend.

Mom said plainly as she focused on the noise coming from the room. Mom was right. Rebecca stopped crying and protesting after that day. The sound of her laughter even frequently trickled out of the room, as if she found immense joy in what she was doing. The men who sought out Rebecca didn't stop coming, either. Every one of them entered the room full of expectations and left satisfied. They claimed Rebecca was the best rabbit-woman they'd ever slept with. Every time I took water for Rebecca, my senses were assaulted by that strange, spicy scent with a pungent note in her bedroom.

Things no one could ever know. But Rebecca swallowed the fear. She smoothed it over with a smile, widened the door and stepped aside like nothing about this moment scared her. Still the Laurent caught it—the quick shift in her eyes, the stiffness in her shoulders, the tightness in her breath. But they didn’t say anything. Rebecca served warm food and showed them where they could rest. The house was smaller than anything they were used to. The food was plain. The wall creaked. But somehow, it felt better than luxury. It felt...right. Like the kind of place where healing could start.

Charlotte also curved her lips and said, "Rebby, you came?" Rebecca sat down across from her with a smile and said, "How come I feel like you looked beautiful again?" Charlotte was taken aback and said, "No, it must be because you haven't seen me in a long time, it's an illusion!" Rebecca looked at her blushing face, and the smile on her face deepened: "There is a kind of... charming beauty." Charlotte's face instantly turned red, and she quickly handed the menu to her, saying, "Take a look at what to eat!"

The Nyla in the photos was already strikingly beautiful—so much so that even Rebecca, despite being a woman herself, felt drawn to her. Her intuition had told her that if she didn't return soon, Damon might be taken by Nyla, prompting her return. What Rebecca hadn't anticipated was that Nyla in person was even more captivating than in the photos—fair-skinned, stunningly attractive, with delicate features that commanded attention even while seated quietly. Rebecca took a deep breath, suppressing her rising jealousy, and forced a gentle smile. "Damon, why did you stop? Nathaniel and the others are waiting for us in the private room," she said softly.

The room smelled faintly of beeswax polish and cut flowers, as though beauty could be bottled and forced into the air. Rebecca stood in the center, silk dressing gown catching the light as she gave orders. One servant adjusted a centerpiece an inch to the left, another straightened a chair, both terrified of her sharp tongue. They moved quickly, afraid she might lash out if she caught them breathing too loudly. Rebecca’s lips curved in satisfaction. At last, the house was coming alive. For once, everything would shine. Everything would remind Valentina of home, of what she had left behind.

She would never allow Sharon to stay by his side and harm him again. Sharon was not surprised at how much Penelope disliked her. What surprised her was that she did not look favorably upon Rebecca either. Based on her understanding, the Lawrence family was not as good as the Zachary family, but they had always been on good terms. Rebecca was a returnee from studying abroad, and her appearance was not bad, but such standards were still not up to Penelope’s expectations. She could not help but wonder what kind of woman it would take to be worthy of Simon Zachary.
