Fairview has changed, I promise.” Her voice tried to shush me, but I rolled my eyes, hardly believing that to be true. But after giving myself one last critical look, I opened the door and was met with Renee’s infectious smile and sparkling eyes. She was dressed in a red dress, exuding confidence and excitement. Both things she already had back in high school as the captain for the girls’ soccer team, things I had lacked back then. Hell… I still lacked them right now.

She sat straight in her chair, her shoulders pulled back and stared daggers at me. "It would've been nice to know there were other prospects in your love life before you made me come all over your fingers in my apartment, Adrian," she said with a coldness that I recognized. As I suspected, Rebecca was a predator. She had only shown me warmth because she expected to gain something from me. As soon as that option was taken away, the mask slipped and her true face was shown.

"And what makes you think she'll be interested in meeting you?" he asked, his tone skeptical. Sheila's smile was a thin, determined line. "I believe she'll be smarter than to think that things can't change," she said. "It's time things changed, and I'm willing to bet that Rebecca will see that too.”
