I took one more photo, then retreated inside and locked the door behind me. G****e was not reassuring. I sat at the kitchen table, laptop open, .22 within arm's reach, and fell down a rabbit hole of wildlife identification pages. Gray wolf tracks averaged four to five inches. Red wolves, smaller. Coyotes, smaller still. The largest domestic dogs — Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds — topped out around five inches, maybe five and a half. Six inches was off the charts. I scrolled through image after image, comparing them to the photos on my phone. The shape was right — four toes, claw marks, the distinctive triangular pad. But the size was wrong. Everything about this was wrong.

There’s one door that is shut, that door leads up to the bedroom. "This is my home, there's only one bedroom so ma'am you take my bedroom and Suki and I will stay in the living room." He picks up the small dog which is circling around his leg. "It's cute." She says looking at the dog. "Yeah she's Suki, she's a great companion." He says kissing the dog. She smiles and slowly sits on the couch holding her head. There is a hammering pain in her head, maybe it is because of all the stress and crying. "Do you have a headache?" He puts the dog down. "No um.. yeah a little bit." She looks up at him. "Okay you sit here I will be back." He walks away and disappears in the kitchen area.

I turned to the door when I was stopped by a third rogue. “Who do we have here?” The uglier of the two spoke as he walked towards me. “Such a pretty red head. Do you know anything about red wolf?” He asked as he came up to me. I shuttered as he spoke. “I don’t know anything about a red wolf. I have never seen one.” I tried to keep my composure. I didn’t want them to see that I was scared. Lela was growling in my head. ‘We can’t shift, Lela. They are looking for you.’ I whispered.

He moved fast and quietly, following the scent trails that only rogues like him could sense. Finally, he reached the deep part of the forest far from the towns and the packs. A place where only the rejected, the forgotten, and the broken stayed. That was the rogue zone. He howled loudly, his voice echoing through the trees. It was a call for all those like him. Immediately shadows started moving in the darkness. One by one, wolves came out from the trees and the woods. Their eyes were cold. Some had scars across their faces, others limped from old fights. These were not pack wolves, they were the wild ones.

To think I wanted to hurt this wolf just a few moments ago makes me feel sick to my stomach. Slate growls, his whole body shaking with anger as his attention returns to something across the creek. Tilting my head back, I see three sets of eyes, each one glowing an unnatural shade of red. Just like the wolves in Bash’s drawings, the are large, feral, and unnatural. Rogues. And not the friendly kind.

And slowly, something starts to come out of the ashes. A black creature with black fur and red eyes. No bigger than any of the logs. Limping out of the brick fireplace and letting out small coughs like a little child. It's a Rogue. A baby. A pup.

She was restless for the last hour. I reached the middle of the forest when suddenly a white wolf came out of the trees and stood in front of me. The wolf was large, his fur was shining under the moonlight and his aura was powerful. He didn't seem like a rogue as his eyes weren't red. Usually rogues have red eyes while he had grey. Red eyes is a sign that their wolves have complete control over them. Maybe he wasn't a rogue for too long or he was just a wolf that got lost. What is certain is that the color of his fur is very rare! This color was not prevalent around here.

Lucian could feel what Raya was before I could, that’s for sure. Two wolves appeared before us within minutes. One was decently large, who I recognized as the Beta wolf. His rusted color fur shagged around his massive figure as he sat at my height. The other wolf was smaller, about Raya’s height, sitting down. His fur was a deep red with naturally orange highlights that made his fur have the same appearance as that of a burning flame.
