I had thought that it would burn me – taking a peek at the two women who were with me, they were back away from the fire, Leah patted the small flame that got on her pants, Lyv helping her put it out. I could still feel the heat, but what was odd was that the flames didn’t burn me. I lowered my hands slowly, looking at the book – now burning yet the pages were intact. My heart beat fast as I walked back to the podium. I blink, there was something new. I blinked again. I rubbed it, feeling the sting I had felt when Leah brought me to Neverwhere.

“What book is it?” Regina hears the acquiescence in Mattel’s question and perks up. Eagerly, she shifts off the bed to pull it up from where she’d placed it on the night stand the day before, practically leaping back and making the mattress bounce with her enthusiasm. Regina turns to him, beaming, parting her lips to explain the latest book that had pulled her attention. Mattel pulls said attention to her, now, with a kiss. The book is abandoned on the floor for the rest of the morning.

Some even had tiny, hand-drawn doodles. Regina’s fingers ran over the ink, her chest tightening. Who did this? These books weren’t just sitting here for decoration. Someone had read them. Someone had loved them. And it wasn’t Damien. As Regina flipped through the book, something slipped from between the pages and fluttered to the floor. A handmade bookmark. She leaned down to pick it up, but just as she did, something else caught her eye that was a glint of silver peeking from beneath Damien’s desk.

He seldom handed her the books they read because he wanted to have an excuse to stay with his mother, but as she skimmed the new chapter, she realized Owen wanted her to read the sex scenes out loud. “This is a dirty trick,” Regina sneered at Owen, and he grinned mischievously. “I don’t remember those words being part of that chapter.” “I’m not talking about the chapter, and you know it.” “What are you talking about, dear?” Mrs. Bennet asked. “I think it’s time we went outside for our walk,” Regina said after she closed the book. “Oh,” Mrs. Bennet’s face fell. “I wanted to hear what happened. It was getting to the good part.”

"You stayed." A day later, Julia received a strange package delivered by hand. Inside: a single page from a diary. Scrawled in childish handwriting: "He watches me at night. Says if I tell, he'll burn the place down. I miss my real mommy. She used to sing to me before the fire." It was signed: "Regina, age 6."

she said firmly, her voice taking a chastising tone. "No, this is exactly the time," I interjected stubbornly. "I saw fire today. Once you light a fire, it has to burn and it doesn't care if this is the time or place. Fire either burns brightly or it fizzles into nothingness and smoke. Without the fire, there is no light. So, are you two burning or fizzling?" I demanded. I wanted an answer. Andrew looked at me, and I shrugged. I might be confused from the drugs, but it had sounded poetic in my head.

The book remained silent, twisting its lips like a female putting on a gloss, “Well, I'm Cwena Engow, and this is Gerey -” “Spare me the details,” the book screamed loudly at her, “I know who you both are better than you both know yourself,” “Shhh, you're going to attract my mother's attention if you continue speaking with such volume. And how did you know us?” “Don't you dare lay as much as a finger on me,” with a scared tone, the book told Gerey who'd wanted to lift it unto his lap, “Unless - you want to burn me.”

Of course, Rex was human and a conscience was a human attribute that a cyborg didn’t inherit. She sat up and lifted her shirt to inspect her tender flesh. Sure enough, she was bruised over the majority of her stomach. Laying back down, she rolled onto her side. Her nose rubbed against the rough wall, but she did nothing to protect her tender flesh from being scraped away as she moaned her misery to the silent room. The heat of her breath bounced back at her as she spewed her thoughts and torments into the rough concrete surface.

They went rolling down the mountain slope and the road was cleared. I removed the barricade and announced that the path was clear. I watched contentedly as Elsa drove smoothly towards St. Normans’. I didn’t go to St. Normans’ rather I went back to Dixonville. On reaching home I took out the book from under my jacket. I ran my hand over the cover of the book. I was about to throw it into the fire when I remembered that the book contained a picture of Prince Audrey. I couldn’t resist the temptation of seeing his picture. I swiftly turned to the page where his picture was printed. I couldn’t bring myself to burn the book with the picture. So I tore out that page folded it and kept it in my pock

Why rip out only one page? I read the numbers in the corners of the pages on either side, noting that they took page sixty-three. So I turn to the contents page at the start of the book. I skim down the list, until I find it. Song of The Sea Maiden ……………………… p63 The sea maiden. The beach. The dreams. The answers are right in front of me. I just can’t see them yet.
