A few years ago, he had picked up a girl from a garbage dump and bought her back to raise her as his granddaughter. “Sir, we are here for look for someone!” Jack dismissed the two large black dogs and seized Anya and Evan standing in front of him.

The phone rang again immediately and I hastily answered it, thinking it was Charlotte. “Hello?” “Your address was leaked. Get out now!” The line went dead but the urgency in Jack’s voice had me on my feet. I forgot about everything in that instant and I ran upstairs and got dressed. I put my phone back on and called Quince. “Quince, can you take the dogs for a while?” Quince owned a farm close to mine and the dogs knew him well, he always looked after them when I left for work before Charlotte had come into my life.

No, that little pup needed to calm down, or he was going to get hurt. “Toby!” Everly was shouting. “Come on, buddy. Just go pee!” Toby refused to cooperate, so Jack took that as his cue to leave. As much as he would’ve enjoyed standing there watching Everly for as long as she was outside, he didn’t want to make things any more complicated for her that day if he could avoid it. Harassing her dog wouldn’t make her want to move away any more quickly. With one last glance, Jack turned and ran back home, only one thought on his mind, one he hated to admit.

His head snapped towards a threatening growl that echoed from the trees. His body chilled at the murderous glare of the Alpha that had appeared to be hunting them.

It was a joyful time of year, and this winter would be more special than usual for me. Before I could react, his cries turned to agonizing howls.

I turned around, following his line of sight, and found myself staring at Miles. "Oh, do you know who that is?" I asked my golden retriever dog, Jack. His tail wagged with excitement, and his ears perked up, indicating familiarity with the person behind me. Jack hasn't met Miles yet, but I told him a lot of things about Miles.
