My Mom's Boyfriend
For a second, everything went silent, the only sound our breathing and the distant hum of the house.
Then, SLAP.
Her hand connected with my cheek hard enough to sting, the crack loud in the small room. I gasped, stumbling back a step and holding my face as hot tears burned in my eyes. The pain bloomed across my skin, sharp and immediate, but it was nothing compared to the shock twisting in my gut.
“You will not speak to me like that,” Mom said, her voice trembling with anger and something deeper, pain, maybe. Her hand was still raised slightly, shaking. “You are staying home this year. End of discussion. I am your mother, and you will respect my decision.”
