"Your Majesty, there is a messenger hawk that came from Alpha King Claudian. There is no ribbon tied on it." My eyes widened. "No ribbon? Is it a straw rope that is tied, instead of a ribbon?" I asked which Flora nodded as she handed me the letter. Along with it was a straw rope she was indicating about. There was always a meaning if a ribbon is being tied up in the messenger hawk's leg. Blue ribbon means an update of the progress of the war. Yellow ribbon means health emergency if a royalty falls ill. Green ribbon means we need more backups from the palace.

My first instinct kicks me to check my phone but once my hand reach out for it, I notice the small box laying over the nightstand. Confusion tightens my brows and I grab the little box in my hand. I open it and immediately, a smile flutters around my mouth. My fingers run over the silk material and a low sigh of contentment parts my lips. It was a ribbon. A blue one. I had the exact same one before, but I lost it. It was my favorite. My gaze drifts to the note sticking to the box and I open it to read the few words scribbled there.

The star pattern continued on the front, making up the border surrounding the exact same image in the middle engraved into the leather binding. I took a seat in a nearby armchair and opened the book. A little dust appeared as I did, along with a faint older text smell. I carefully turned to the first page which held the title: Ancient Curses. Oh, sh*t. Was this one of the books Ronan had used when looking for a cure for Leo's curse?

“But be careful what you seek. Some knowledge carries a weight that’s hard to put down.” I nodded silently, then turned my attention to the books. I ran my fingers along the spines, each one labeled with symbols instead of titles. One in particular caught my attention, it had a crimson ribbon binding it shut, with a faint marking on the cover: a crescent moon surrounded by flames. Without knowing why, I reached for it. The moment my fingers touched the leather, a shiver ran down my spine. Something told me this book wasn’t just old, it was forbidden.

She threw the ribbon into the water and began to walk back down the dock. I moved quickly behind her and grabbed her shoulders, spun her around to face me and spoke, “I’m not sure what your thinking, but this was all for you, not her, she helped me with all this to prove how sorry she was for everything she did to separate us, but Roe, I swear this was all for you.” She took a step back, shaking her head, “for me you say, then why did that ribbon say her name and yours on it, why are you both dressed in white and why the fuck is she holding a Luna bouquet with the ceremonial red ribbons of a mating bond.”

“And another on… scent binding rituals? Ugh. No thanks.” Iris moved slower, reverent. “Look for anything titled Chronicles, or Legacy,” she said softly, running her fingers along the bindings. Aurora drifted toward a central table carved from dark stone. Its surface shimmered faintly with symbols that looked like they’d been burned into the rock by claws. Sitting in the center was a single thick book—dustless and pristine despite its surroundings. The gold title glinted in the dim light: “The Bloodline of Kings: A History of the Lycan Throne”

Slowly, I opened it to the first page. My name stared back at me, written in Kester's familiar handwriting. MINE. I flipped to the next page, my fingers trembling so hard I nearly tore it. "I took the ribbon she wore today. She looked so perfect in it. I couldn't help myself. It still smells like her. I kept it in my box. My secret. She can never know." My heart stopped. The ribbon. I thought I'd lost it years ago. I slapped the book shut, squeezing my eyes closed as my breathing grew ragged. My hands clenched the diary so tightly that my knuckles turned white.

The lantern cast her shadow long and warped against the wall, stretching her thinner than she really was. There was something on the table. She hadn’t left it there. Ben felt the spike of fear the moment her eyes landed on it. A ribbon. It lay coiled neatly beside the lamp, pale blue, clean and new. Completely out of place in the modest, worn-down room. Her breath hitched as she reached for it, fingers hovering just above the fabric. She hadn’t owned anything like this. Her chest tightened. She picked it up, the silk cool and unfamiliar against her skin. It smelled faintly of something sharp and foreign, like leather and smoke.

She’s still much shorter than me, even several inches off the floor. “I wanted to apologize for being a bit short with you lately,” I say, “and I wanted to give you one of your birthday gifts a bit early.” I pull the gift out and hand it to her. She hesitantly takes it, still looking at me. “Go on, open it.” I watch as Ruby timidly tears into the wrapping paper to reveal a book that I’ve specially ordered just for her. “The Complete History of the Three Kingdoms and their Mystical Counterparts,” she says, reading the title out loud. Her face lights up as she does so.
