One by one, the warriors stepped forward to pledge their allegiance. But I hardly heard them. Because sitting through the broken window, on the ledge like a carrion bird, was a raven. The black eyes stared at me with an unnerving intelligence. Around its leg was tied with silver thread a little scroll. The raven made one call, unrolled the scroll, and took flight. Clara took it from her, unrolled it, and her face turned white. “Andrew. Elena. You must see this.”

I know Raven would have had a hard time with me gone, since the twins are so young, but I never imagined Tara challenging her. “Tara attacked her?” I swallow the knot building in my throat, as Thane nods. “Yes, and Raven won as usual, she killed Tara, and the Council has been calling her a blood wolf, whatever that means,” Thane answers, making me smile, knowing Raven would have beaten anyone who challenged her. No one truly understands how strong Raven really is, and what she’s capable of, but Osric and I know she isn’t someone to be underestimated nor messed with.

He tried to chase away the thought of him being caught by her. "Who are you? What are you hiding from me? Why have you chosen to hide yourself away from me?" Raven decides to give him the chance of explaining himself to her by not being so specific of her words. "I don't understand what you're saying Raven. What's the problem?" Not being able to handle his character she decides to scream at him just to show him how serious she was.

It seemed they didn’t care too much about the gruesome battle raging outside; their eyes were on the invisible barrier surrounding the house. As the witches walked along the edge, creating a semicircle around the barrier, another figure stepped out from the growing fog outside the tree line. The tall Raven had straight black hair that ran almost the entire length of her back. She was thin and had strange black markings all over her pale skin, which seemed to whirl on her skin as she began muttering something. A black film emerged as she chanted, swirling around her body in pulses.

“So, just wearing these makes it impossible for them to find me? No one will pull me into the Dream Realm. Or track me? Is that right? Are you sure?” Raven asked. She stared at the heavy necklace that now hung around her neck. It looked like a cheap piece of costume jewelry and nothing special at all. Tarnished silver.

This was real. "You are the key to saving our species," Chandra said, her voice soft yet filled with undeniable authority. Raven shook her head, disbelief clouding her features. "I'm nothing," she whispered. "I can’t even shift. How could I possibly save anyone?" The Goddess regarded her with an expression that was neither pitying nor impatient. Just knowing. As if she understood the doubts weighing on Raven’s heart. "What do you know of the Witches of Crow?" Chandra asked, tilting her head slightly.

From what? This latest riddle complicated the situation more instead of simplifying it. I couldn’t help but ask again. “Why was I protected? Who wants to harm me, Raven? I don’t have enemies.” Raven closed her eyes for a while, and when she opened them, they were burning golden. “Power hungry people are everywhere, Harley. They’ll be jealous of your power and harm you.” She talked about some imaginary rivals, making me wonder why I even shifted if it was so risky. My life was already a grave mess without this lycan trouble.

Varric continued, “You will each be given the riddle. You may work alone, or seek help from those who stand with you. But know this: speed alone will not grant victory. Only truth will.” An attendant pressed a rolled parchment into my hands. My pulse thundered as I unrolled it. The riddle’s first line leapt out at me: “I am taken from a mine, locked in a wooden case, never released, and yet almost every soul uses me. What am I?” My lips parted. A riddle. A test of patience, not blades. Serena scoffed behind me. “Child’s play.” But as I read on, the riddles grew stranger, deeper, layered in metaphor and hidden meaning. They weren’t just puzzles—they were traps for the impatient.

"He doesn't usually have friends at parties. He says most people at parties are boring." "That's not quite what I said," Rhys interjected, though his lips twitched with amusement. "And yes, this is my friend. Her name is Ravyn." "Like the bird?" the child asked with interest. "That's a pretty name. Birds are smart. Dad says ravens are one of the smartest birds.
