I stood in the middle of the living room, facing the security camera's blinking red light, practicing my smile again and again. Looking into the lens, I spoke softly, like I was leaving a message for the Mom who'd watch it someday. "Mom, look. I practiced the perfect smile again today. "Lift the corners of my mouth fifteen degrees and show eight teeth. The books say that's the most sincere smile. The one that makes people feel warm. "I've practiced so much my face hurts... but that's okay. "When you watch this tomorrow... will you tell me I did a good job? "Will you finally believe I wasn't lying to you?"

Immediately Roberto saw that I was still not smiling, he stopped grinning. “Why aren’t you even half as happy as you’re supposed to be? This is a big win for us and you put up a face like someone just died? Come on, what’s wrong with you?” He quizzed, his arms stretched out in demonstration.

'Dude, you just posted a pic of yourself in sweats, smoking with the biggest fucking smile, so spill! I bark out a laugh at her text. 'Nothing to say, just woke up in a good mood.' I reply with a kiss and a smiley emoji. Let's see if she can guess. A minute passes when I hear a ping. 'Hold it, that's not just a “good mood”, THAT’S FUCKING AFTERGLOW!!! Holy fucking shit balls!! FUCKING FINALLY!!' Her text makes me laugh out loud as I finish my smoke and head back inside to get ready because my 20 minutes are up when another ping chimes.

My chest tightens. Mom leans over. “Draw him a smile, sweetheart,” she says. Lila grabs a crayon. “Why do you not smile, Uncle Vor?” she asks. Her eyes big. Innocent. “You look sad.” The room quiets. Even the ocean seems to pause. I set my fork down. “I smile plenty, monster,” I say. I force a grin, wide but fake. “See? He smiles at me, not his usual smile but at least he is not frowning. “I am good, do not worry. I will be fine. I am definitely taking you up on those monopoly lessons you offered,” he says and I beam at him. “It looks like Blake needs them also, seeing as he sucks worse than I do,” he continues and we all laugh at Blake as his face darker and he becomes grumpier.
