Gradually, I drifted off to sleep, only to jolt awake by a loud crash. As I stared at the group of men surrounding our car, I realised that we were under a rogue attack. But when my gaze fell on a ‘rogue’ with a mole above his left eye, I froze. Wait. I have seen that man before. I had once stumbled upon Logan meeting this guy, his mole too distinct to forget. Come to think of it, some of the other men seemed familiar too. That meant they were all Logan’s men in disguise. So this ‘rogue attack’ was staged by him!

Cows were free to roam for only a period of time, then yeah, imminent death. Logan has changed since the last time we saw- since we saw Megan last. He has become darker. More- aggressive, more rabid. He was those things before but now so...more. Last week, I had woken up naked in the forest, covered in blood. My heart almost went through my chest because, for a split second, I wondered if I was the killer or one of, the killers on the murder spree. Until I spotted a deer’s remains near me.

He glared at the other rogue, who stammered, "We… we didn't know, Logan. Little J said—" Logan snapped, cutting him off. "Jeremiah's pack is the reason we even have this fucking camp. He is not some tyrant. He helped his people during the flood. He fed them and sheltered them. We can't afford to piss him off. If he comes looking for her, we are fucked." The other rogue nodded frantically. "If he finds out we touched his mate, we are toasted. Let's just take her home or drop her at the border so we don't die tonight."

A howl sounds some distance in the front, just at the same time a group of rogues leap out of the bushes. I spring into motion immediately, all my training kicking in. I knock the first one down just before he shifts into his wolf, wrapping the wire around his neck and pulling hard. Suddenly, the clearing is a battlefield. Weapons clash against weapon, rogues fall down. I roll to the side, avoiding the snapping of fangs as a wolf lands where I stood a second ago. From the corner of my eye, I see Ragnar watching it all from the sidelines, like a messenger of death himself.

We were too late, but we wouldn't let that stop us. As we cautiously approached the heart of the pack, I saw Logan kneeling on the ground, hands bound behind his back. He was surrounded by his pack, all of them kneeling in fear. The rogue Alpha, a hulking beast with cold, cruel eyes, was towering over them, his voice a low growl as he spoke. Also, before my eyes, the Rogue Alpha plunged a wicked claw into the heart of Logan's general. The general fell, motionless.

The other was Mia. Mia was a mystery, even among rogues. Tall and striking, with coppery brown hair always tied back and sharp eyes that missed nothing, she had once been a beta female in a powerful northern pack. Her mate rejected her for a higher-ranking she-wolf, casting Mia out like trash. But unlike most broken wolves, Mia didn’t shatter, she sharpened. She had joined the rogues five years ago and quickly made herself useful. She fought when she had to, healed when others couldn't, and was one of the few who could negotiate borders and land without spilling blood.

About a week after we met, there was a rogue attack; she was one of the few who didn’t make it. It all made sense why Dylan hated Owen.
