Xavier snorted, quiet, but unmistakably amused despite himself.
Lorenzo turned his head, and his eyes, usually sharp, calculating, cold, softened. Just slightly.
“I didn’t expect to open my eyes again,” he murmured. “So I suppose I should thank the two of you. Even if it kills me to do so.”
“You protected my wife,” Xavier said, stepping forward, voice firm. “You almost died doing it. That deserves more than thanks, it deserves respect. And as much as our rivalry goes way back, that was a line that you managed to break through.”
