I murmured, watching the foam in my drink dissolve, I then used my spoon to shift it to a side and scooped it onto the saucer. Lev had shifted his attention to me now. “In high school. I finished a book, actually.” He lifted his mug to his lips and took a sip. “You mean to say a whole book? What's it about?” “Yeah. A whole book. It's a... a messy teenage attempt at fantasy romance. I was a reader then and writing down my imaginations was key. I wrote about betrayal and two people who are so in love.” I paused before I said too much. That book was born from a place of how I wanted my parents to act and love each other.

I want her to know how much I want her and want to be with her, but I don’t want to scare her off. “What were you reading on the balcony?” I asked her. “Just a romance book,” she replied. “It’s about a mafia princess who falls in love with a guy in the mafia, but she’s betrothed to someone else. It’s very well written.” “Sounds like a great love story. One you could tell your kids,” I smirked. “Well, probably not all the violence and sex,” Isabella giggled. “True,” I chuckled. “What are you doing tomorrow?” I probed.

She thought this was cool. “I mean—wow,” she went on, bouncing slightly on her toes. “An age gap romance? Like a real one? Your dad really married someone younger? That’s… that’s honestly amazing! I read so many books with this trope. Secret romance, huge age gap, wealthy older guy, younger wife—ugh, one of my favorites. It’s so dramatic and intense! Sexy, even!” She wiggled her shoulders playfully. I forced a smile. “Yeah,” I said, my voice sounding distant even to me. “It’s… something.”

“You won’t believe the fun I just had!” Gabrielle lifted herself on one elbow, intrigued. “Where have you been?” she asked, trying to hide her curiosity. Emma grinned and flopped onto her bed carefree. “Oh, just hanging out in my boyfriend’s room!” Her relaxed tone sent Gabrielle’s mind racing with judgment. To Gabrielle, romance seemed like an unfamiliar territory filled with potential problems she had only read about in stories. “Your boyfriend? So what was so fun about being in Brad’s room?” Gabrielle asked while biting her lip in thought.
