I glanced at the book she was reading, the cover bright and dramatic, with a couple locked in a passionate embrace. My eyebrows shot up and as my gaze drifted to the shelves lining her side of the room, my jaw nearly dropped. If I thought the cover of that one was five percent sexual, then the rest were hundred. Books were everywhere, stacked, lined up neatly, or scattered in small piles. Most of them had similar covers, all romance novels with titles that made me blink twice. “You’ve got a collection,” I said, half-impressed and half-shocked. Her cheeks turned crimson, the blush creeping all the way to her ears. She looked like she wanted the floor to swallow her whole.

“I’m looking for some books for my fiancée, but I’m not sure what she likes to read.” The sales assistant tilted her head thoughtfully. “Well, we have a wide variety. “She’ll probably spend the whole holiday in here if you let her.” I walked the aisles slowly, trailing my fingers over the books. Classics. Thrillers. A whole section of contemporary romance—Mirabel’s doing, mostly. She’d started collecting them in high school, said they were “escapist but smart.” I’d never read them. Too many happy endings. Too much hope wrapped in pretty words. I pulled one down at random. Dark cover, brooding man in a suit, and title written in gold foil: Claimed by the Billionaire. I snorted softly, then slid it back.

But Arabella’s heart had already begun beating far too quickly. A breeze moved softly through the marketplace between them. Neither spoke for several moments. Then Edwin finally gestured toward the bookstore. “Do you enjoy reading?” “Yes.” “What sort of books?” Arabella hesitated. “Poetry mostly.” One dark brow lifted slightly. “Romantic poetry?” Her cheeks warmed instantly. “Sometimes.” Edwin looked dangerously amused again. “You continue to surprise me, Lady Arabella.” “And you continue mocking me.” “Only because you blush so beautifully.” The words escaped him so naturally that both of them froze afterward.
