I pulled the quilt up to my chin and sank deeper into my pillow. "Let me tell you a bedtime story." Riley lay beside me and slipped his arm around my shoulder. "How about I tell you the story of the three pigs? After all, I need to practice telling stories to the baby." "Okay." I chuckled, looking up at him expectantly. "Once upon a time, three little pigs lived in a forest..." When Riley was done with the fairy tale, he started singing lullabies in an effort to get me to fall asleep. While his voice wasn't amazing, it was calming.

I nodded and followed her to our little angels' room. Samantha tucked in Poppy, and I tucked in Violet. Poppy and Violet couldn't sleep without listening to bedtime stories, especially Poppy. I brought out the story we'd be reading tonight, "The Christmas Cookie," since Christmas was just a few weeks away. Samantha and I started reading the story, making it more real by adding sound effects with our mouths. Our little angels giggled, "awwn" ed, and pouted their lips until they fell asleep.

Lucas joined them on the bed, "Looks like our teddy bear is in for some excitement." They continued weaving imaginative tales, laughter filling the room, until Kai finally drifted off to sleep with dreams of daring teddy bear escapades. Eve softly kissed his forehead and whispered, "Goodnight, my little adventurer." Lucas smiled, "Sweet dreams, buddy." As they tiptoed out of the room, Lucas looked at Eve, "Our bedtime stories are getting more elaborate." Eve chuckled, "Blame it on your son. He's got a vivid imagination." And with that, they left the room, leaving behind the peaceful slumber of their little mommy's boy, surrounded by dreams sparked by their whimsical bedtime tales.

“Can you tell the story again?” Of course, she should have expected that Ramsey wouldn’t be satisfied with only hearing the story just once, but that’s all he’ll be getting from her tonight. “Little darling,” she yawned. “Mommy is tired. Mommy needs to go to bed just like you. It’s way past bedtime.” “Awww,” Ramsey sulked as he dropped down, finding Mr. Winslow again. “I promise, I’ll tell the story twice tomorrow if I tuck you in early.”

I said with a small laugh. The remaining nighttime was spent in bedtime routines and warm baths, in stories and toothbrushes. Mirabel insisted on one of Clinton’s old bedtime tales — something about a crocodile and a mango — and I fumbled my way through the story while they giggled under their covers. When they finally dozed off, I stayed a while longer in the hallway, just watching them sleep. Japheth curled toward the window. Jake, hugging his teddy. Mirabel, one leg dangling off the bed as if dreaming of her little bride walk.
