Roman stood with his back to her, phone trembling in his hand. She watched his shoulders stiffen. “What is it?” she asked again. But he didn’t answer. Minutes stretched. Her heartbeat thudded louder now, fear creeping in. Then the phone buzzed again, this time an incoming call from the same number. Roman swiped accept, and brought the phone to his ear. “Hello?” He said carefully. A voice came through—low, distorted, and calm in a way that made the hairs on Roman’s neck rise. “Sex under the stars? How romantic.”

With a nod, she picked up the phone, her eyes lingered on the unknown number before locking with Romeo's emerald gems. Romeo understood without her saying a word and smiled, "please excuse us while we take the call outside." They both rose from their seats and left the dining table. Cara shook her head with a soft smile when she heard her brother say; "so they answer calls together too? How romantic." Arriving outside, it was just them and the cool breeze. The phone stopped ringing, only to start again. With a soft breath, she answered the call and placed it on speaker. Waiting, she stared in silence at the screen, praying and hoping that it is wasn't who she suspected it to be.

He hadn’t asked, but I was here, so I might as well get some information. Romeo reached backwards for Nero’s work phone. I thought he was going to call security. My breath hitches in my throat. He pressed one button, and I knew he was calling for the receptionist. “Hi, this is Romeo Amoretti. My brother is unavailable, so I’m seeing his student. I’ll need about an hour with her. Put that in the system, and call me once the hour is up. Counting as soon as the call ends.” The person on the other line must have responded because he nodded and slammed the phone back into place.

“Do it properly. Don't be sloppy. Little by little until you get him to agree to what I want to happen. Open up this topic to him but don't make it obvious.” He ended the call with just a reminder about what I would do to attract Callum. Can I really do that? I’m too innocent to even know how to romance my husband! I don’t know a thing about romancing or seducing a man because I don’t have any experience about that! Fuck! I stood up straight when someone suddenly opened the door. And there, I saw Callum looking so wasted. I was shocked to see his face. His dress shirt’s buttons were now open. I don’t know where his coat is now and his necktie.

He answered on the very first ring. "Well, hello there," Roman's smooth, teasing voice came through the line, completely contrasting the storm of panic currently raging in my head. That familiar warmth, that playful edge, it was so jarringly normal that it almost made me angry. "I thought you called because you missed me, sweetheart. To what do I owe the pleasure of a midnight call?"

"This isn’t a romance novel, Nanny. This is my life, and I’m just trying to do my job without embarrassing myself." Nanny laughs, clearly enjoying this way too much. "Oh, Isa. You’re making it sound like it’s the worst thing in the world. Just imagine it—a forbidden workplace romance, secret glances, and the tension! Oh, how thrilling! The babysitter and the boss. You’ve already got the perfect setup." I glare at her. "Nanny, stop. He’s my boss, and he has a child. A cute child, by the way, who is clearly going through something. I’m not about to entertain any fantasies about him."

My phone kept vibrating nonstop with notification sounds. Faith stood up and asked, "Messages from Rita?" I glanced at the contact name and nodded. The corners of her lips curved upward into a smile.

Trying to make conversation, he asked, "Are you here for work or school?" Chewing my pastry, I decided to tease him. "I’m running away from a wedding." He choked slightly, staring at me in absolute disbelief. I couldn't help but laugh out loud. He gave me a thumbs-up. "Brave move. High risk, high reward." I grinned and returned the gesture. "You’re not so bad yourself." Just as the words left my mouth, a raspy voice called out from a short distance away. "Grace." Hearing that familiar voice froze me in place. I looked up to see Daniel standing a few paces away.

The Calling Chapter 1 I am walking down the cliffy road, it’s dark out with only the street lamp to illuminate my path. I am slightly cold and very irritated at my current situation. She glanced at the screen and froze. From an Unknown Number: "You have no idea who you're dealing with, Serena. Back off-while you still can." Her breath hitched. Damien noticed the change in her expression.
