More Than Roommates
“You and your roommate were close, huh?”
“Yeah,” I say quickly, locking the phone. “We were.”
She grins, oblivious. “Kinda cute, actually. Bro love or whatever.”
Before I can reply, she’s gone, laughing down the hall.
The dining table’s already crowded when I come back down. Someone’s pushed the centerpiece aside to make room for too many plates, and Dad’s in the middle of retelling a story he’s told every Christmas I can remember, something about a buzzer-beater he made in college. He’s pouring drinks to punctuate it, sloshing a little onto the table but pretending not to notice.
