The woman they called Rose led us through the massive pack house, her lavender-colored hair catching the light every time she turned to acknowledge one of the wolves who waved or greeted her. She responded to each one with a warm smile, her presence exuding effortless kindness. I couldn't stop staring at her hair—it was unlike anything I had ever seen before, like strands of spun lilac, soft and otherworldly. Pearl nudged me, breaking my trance, and I realized Rose was speaking to me.
