"She dropped a goblet while crying out." He hesitates very briefly before reaching one of the nearby counters. "This is the goblet, your Grace." She placed the items on the desk, arranging them neatly, like she was about to cast some magical spell or summon a powerful demon, when the door creaked to life again.

The orbs twinkled in the light, larger ones above us as smaller ones lined the pathway—bouquet placed throughout, wrapped around trees and skirting the bottom portion of the stage. A similar goblet to our ceremony sat on the table, a silver knife beside it. Moon crystals are laid out in a perfect circle around them. Two crowns sat on either side, one thin and matched my ring. Made to look like thin vines spun around to form a circle. Tiny golden leaves were sticking out, gems of emerald and moonstone atop each one. The second was bigger, the vines thicker, the same gems lining the vines instead of the leaves.

It was lined with all sorts of exotic goblets and chalices—silver, gold, encrusted with jewels—and between them sat several glass pitchers of a red liquid, fruit floating inside.

The goblet was the last. She stared at it for a long moment. The liquid inside wasn’t red. It was gold. Bright, thick, almost glowing. She touched it—and the air held still. Nothing struck her. No visions. No screams. Only a whisper: Drink, and become what they fear. Sera lifted the goblet. Her hands shook. Her lips parted. But she hesitated. What if this was the end? What if this was exactly what they wanted—to watch her choke on power she was never meant to survive?
