Stretching my legs, I heard a low rumbling sound from my stomach, like a bad engine trying to gear up. Instinctively, my hands stretched to my stomach and I rubbed it lovingly, the thought of a new life inside me bringing a smile to my face. A few months ago, I would have thought it was hunger, but now I was sure it was my baby. My precious baby. "How are you feeling this morning? Don't worry, you'll be out soon," I said in a soothing voice to my stomach. I did that every day since I read that babies could respond to their mothers' voices even in the womb.

Once, not long after we’d finally drifted off together, a small, strangled whimper cut through the dark. I shot upright with a jolt that made every muscle scream. “What? What? Are they—” Rowan’s face screwed up, emitting another fragile, questioning sound. Not a full cry. It's more like a squeaky door hinge. “Breathing’s fine,” Ronan croaked, already leaning over the bassinet. “Color’s good.” My heart slammed against my ribs. Sweat prickled at my temples. “This is it,” I whispered. “This is how it starts. Every noise, every twitch, every—”

“And the baby?” “He is asleep beside her in the bassinet,” Adrian said. “Wrapped so tightly you can barely see him except for his face. One hand is curled near his mouth as if he forgot to let go after feeding. His breathing is uneven the way newborns breathe, but steady. The nurse says that is normal.” He paused briefly. “He is very small,” he added quietly. “Smaller than I expected, but strong. He feeds constantly and falls asleep immediately afterward.” His mother listened without interruption.

My hand presses against my stomach. “No,” I whisper. This isn’t mine. Not the slow ache of skipping a meal. This hunger is sharp. Urgent. Like a body sounding an alarm it can’t turn off. The baby in the bassinet. Crying. Crying. Crying. A wave of dizziness rolls through me. I grab the edge of the counter to steady myself. The baby doesn’t know what hunger means. It only knows something hurts. Something is missing. And no one is coming.

However, after a while, they could see nothing that could unsettle him. "He is fine. His heartbeat is normal, and his stomach is calm" dreading to tell the Boss, the doctor report. They have no source to explain why he is suddenly fussy. "Then why is he crying?" he sharply asks, making everyone flinch in fear. No one noticed he moves closer to them. Almost beside them, while they circle the baby. Before anyone could respond, the newborn stopped crying. His unfocused gaze wanders around while blinking a few times. He is also pursing his lips like trying to figure something out.

Outside, the hallway erupted in the sound of wet, tearing meat and a howl that ended in a human gurgle. "I can't—Zack, something is wrong." Camille slumped against the crib, her hands clutched over the sharp mountain of her stomach. Her face was gray. Sweat matted her hair to her forehead. She wiped a line of snot from her lip with a trembling hand. "The baby. It’s kicking... but it’s sharp. Like it’s trying to cut its way out."

Usually, newborns would suffer from colic or other uncomfortable conditions in the first three months. Aristotle was almost three months old, just a few days shy from it too. However, there were no signs of colic. He ate, drank and excreted normally. This really made her feel helpless.

I began to feel discomfort as my stomach rumbled. "Baby... I'm not feeling too well," I replied, clutching my baby bump, while Ramirez, already concerned, hurried towards me.

His eyes widened and he looked as if he had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. “What’s wrong with her, Mommy? Why won’t she stop crying?” Reese asked with great worry. I forced a smile, even though my insides were twisted in knots. “She might just have some gas trapped in her tummy, sweetheart. Babies get uncomfortable sometimes.” I hoped that was all it was. I had to hope. I adjusted Roxy, propping her upright against my shoulder and gently rubbing her back in slow, firm circles. “Come on, Roxy,” I whispered softly. “Let’s get that little bubble out.”

Soon enough she managed to yank out her fist again, though the nurse had tied her so well before, and sucked on it again. The noises she made made Kyle and Jasmine watch her. She was really a bundle full of new surprises. Every glimpse gave them something new to learn about a newborn. Sometimes she would make noises like she wanted to cry, then sometimes she would suck her fist furiously again, then sometimes she would stick her tongue out and lick her lips. She fell asleep when she grew tired. Even in sleep her mouth worked softly as though she was feeding in a dream. "It's so annoying." Jasmine finally grumbled while pinning him with a begrudging look.
