Rowan frowns. "Is that bad?" "Not necessarily. Every pup develops at their own pace. How are you handling all of this?" The doctor asks. I look back at the screen and see that the pup now has a thumb in her mouth. I smile as I watch her play with her fingers inside my stomach. All of a sudden, she lets out a big kick that makes her look almost like she is swimming back and forth in my stomach. When she does that, I laugh as I feel butterflies filling my stomach.

"What's happening? Are you bleeding?" "I don't know, I don't think so!" I shriek. The fluttering happens again, and I clutch my stomach. "Something is happening inside me!" Alma stills, and then she lifts my hand from my stomach and repalces it with hers. Then the fluttering happens again, and she throws her back and laughs from her belly. "That is the babies moving." Her eyes are gleeful. "It's like butterfly wings this early on." "Oh." I smile wide and wipe the tears from my eyes. "Oh my gosh, I thought something bad was happening!"

Her lips parted. "He's beautiful," she whispered. Roman was already talking, the words tumbling out. "He has your nose. Definitely your nose. And look at his fingers—so small—I've never seen anything so small—" The baby cried louder. Roman froze. "What do I do? Why is he crying? Is he supposed to cry this much?" The nurse stepped forward, smiling. "He's fine, Mr. Sinclair. He's just letting you know he's here." "Right. Right." Roman's hands were trembling. He held the baby like he was made of glass. "The cord—I need to—"

Her breaths were slow and steady, a soothing rhythm that momentarily eased the storm inside me. My fingers traced light circles on her back, feeling the warmth of her through the thin fabric of her shirt. Each touch was a silent promise to protect her, no matter the cost. My gaze drifted to her growing belly, and I noticed a subtle movement—a tiny ripple beneath the surface. Without thinking, I rested my hand gently on her stomach. Almost immediately, a small kick pressed back against my palm.

I woke up startled when something hard bumped in my belly. I pressed my hand against my stomach and rubbed it. It didn’t hurt, it felt uncomfortable, and I’d never felt anything like that before. I sat still on the bed waiting for another nudge. When nothing happened I stood up and walked to the bathroom. I must be hungry again.

Mandy laughed and lifted her shirt so that they could watch the baby kick or punch, visible through her skin. “It’s getting a little crowded in there,” she explained shyly. “Does it hurt?” his question was a hushed whisper. Mandy shook her head, “Not usually. There are times when it feels like the baby gets caught in my ribcage and that doesn’t feel particularly good, but I don’t know what is really happening in there. There are other times when the baby gets the hiccups, and my belly bounces with every time.” Elliot was fascinated by her stomach. His large hands covered the delicate skin, and he delighted every time the baby moved.

He tells me and I nod my head again. Half an hour later, the baby started to stir and cried in a short, low-pitched voice. That was the first time I took him into my arms and held him to my chest. I had no idea what to do other than to hold him. He started to squirm in my arms, and I instantly knew he was hungry.

My hand automatically went to my stomach. "What is it?" Adrian asked with urgency, stepping a little closer. They're moving," I whispered. There was a second kick, more distinct now, and another. My eyes widened. "It's strong. Stronger than last time." Adrian hovered beside me, uncertain. "Is that… normal?" I nodded, my eyes stinging with tears. "Yes. They're just saying hello, I think." I placed both hands over my belly, feeling the little thuds. My chest bloomed with warmth, so overwhelming it blocked out everything else.
