There was twice as much noise and the ground on either side of the path shook. They rumbled ominously at his heels and he stumbled into a brisk trot. “Alright, alright,” Jim said. “I’m going.” Despite his fatigue and his mock bravado Jim was very, very afraid. He’d seen what those things could do and he knew they were playing with him.

Once I reach her I take her bottle of beer out of her hand and set it on the table then lean down and throw her over my shoulder laughing at her cute little screech. "Chris, what are you doing?" She laughs as she asks me making me smile, "You heard Jack, we're child-free tonight and I plan on making the most of it." I smile when I feel a shiver run through her body glad that she understands what I'm silently trying to say. "Well let's get going then, cowboy!"

The fresh taste of freedom, my hair whipping against the brisk wind, and the adrenaline coursing through my veins are all so sweet. I'm finally free, and it is exhilarating.

Full lungfuls of air that did not taste of politics or regret. I ran for hours, as a dark streak through the neutral territories. The freedom was intoxicating. I did not have to think, only to feel. The pump of blood, the stretch of muscle, the simple joy of movement. For the first time in years. I felt a pure, uncomplicated joy. I could have run forever.

Running was freedom. In my wolf form all the threats and worry faded away and animal instinct took over. It was bliss to feel the damp soil beneath my paws and to have the fresh wind ruffle my fur. This was simple and easy and didn't require complicated thoughts or feelings of guilt.

When ready. Without fear.

For the first time in six years, I wasn’t running. I was actually, totally, free.

A surge of energy coursed through my veins setting me free from the burdens of my human form. Under the cover of darkness, my senses sharpened, the world around me vivid and alive. With an exhilarating burst of speed, I raced through the trees, my paws carrying me swiftly along the forest floor. Each stride filled me with an indescribable sense of liberation and contentment, the weight of my responsibilities momentarily lifted.

I read it quickly. Dear Dean, I'm sorry to write you this letter. My pack isn't safe anymore. The news about who I am is out and I will be hunted to the ends of the earth. I can't put you or anyone else at risk so I'm running. No pack would be strong or safe enough. I would die if I caused you or your pack harm. I wish things were different but this is my reality and I must make the right choice. Please find someone else that will make you happy that will be a good Luna for your pack. Please let me go.
