It is the sound of adults discovering the floor is gone and continuing the presentation.
Six weeks before Day Zero becomes five.
Then four.
Maya stops counting aloud. The city starts counting for her.
Empty shelves. Longer sirens. More police near hospitals. More closed clinics. More signs saying TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE, which might as well be the national anthem.
On a Thursday evening, she drives to the industrial estate.
Rain threatens but does not commit. The sky hangs low and grey over the storage rows. She parks between two vans, waits thirty seconds, checks mirrors, checks corners, then unlocks Unit 47.
