Suddenly, Raeya felt a burning sensation at the back of her left palm. “Ryder, look!” There were black markings, like someone was drawing on her with invisible fingers. “What’s that?” he asked. He looked at it closer. “It’s a flame.” True enough, it was a single flame. Raeya only recognized it after it was fully shaded in black. When the burning sensation died, her glow also stopped.

The fire flickered softly. "You're trying too hard," another person said. I turned to see a new woman standing beside Elara. She had the same red eyes, but her hair was knotted down her back. "I'm Mara, the third Ruby Wolf. Fire doesn't respond to force. It responds to will." I tried again, this time imagining the fire as part of me—an extension of my own energy. The flame jumped higher, growing to the size of a campfire. "Good," Mara nodded. "Now contain it. Make it smaller without losing its heat."

Inside Ruby’s fading consciousness, she saw a massive, burning iron cage. Behind the bars, a giant she-wolf with fur as white as snow and piercing silver eyes clawed at the barrier.
