When I did, Selene began chanting magical words as she stepped into where I lay. She didn't for a minute stop chanting as she began to use a paintbrush to draw the half-moon on my forehead. The moment the paintbrush touched my forehead, that was the beginning of the pain. I screamed in pain, it was as though the Lunar Ink and the paintbrush were burning my skin.

She said lovingly and ruffled my hair. “Ok now mom, don’t think we forgot about it. Answers please.” Mom’s smile faltered a bit but she let out a sigh. “Alright. So, this rune that you drew today, this helped us a lot in defeating the demon that had plagued our territory and threatened to devour the entire planet.” “Oooh. wow, that is so cool” Talia chimed in as I listened patiently, waiting to hear more from my mother. There was a faraway look in her eyes as she stated, “The Moon Goddess Selene, she gifted me with the ability to draw runes…and not just draw runes but to create new ones. But so far, I have only been able to create one that worked as well as I hoped.”

She drew constantly now, her sketchbook filling with images: Kaelan at the helm, his face carved by wind and sun; Althea sleeping, peaceful in a way she'd never been in the palace; Liam fishing, his concentration absolute; Sera at the tiller, her weathered hands guiding them toward freedom. She drew the sea in all its moods: calm and storm, dawn and dusk, infinite and terrifying. On the third evening, Sera called them together.

Although she looked quite different from the sculptures and historical books I have seen, I knew it was the same woman “Yes, Selene the goddess of the moon,” I said. Dane lowered his gaze with his chest heaving. And he stood there for about a minute in somewhat deep thought. His shoulders seemed to droop in defect and the image he posed got to me.

I glanced at a few of the books, some fantasy novels and a small sketch pad. I opened the sketch pad and looked through it, she was good. Really good. The scenes were mostly outdoors. Forests, waterfalls, mountains. All done with such grace and precision. Each more lovely and realistic than the last. I noticed at the bottom there was a J written as beautifully as the drawings themselves. I got to the last page and there was a drawing of a moon. Bright and beautiful in the sky but there was something else to it. The drawing felt sad. “What the hell.” I snapped as I lifted my hand and wiped a tear from my cheek.

She tried to call some of them back, but they were too focused on their drawings. Selene continued helping the kids. She drew a tiger for one boy and a unicorn for a little girl. The children cheered and showed their drawings to each other proudly. For the first time in a long time, Selene felt useful. She felt like she was doing something good.

Directly on a single illustration. Mira swallowed. I saw it. She saw me notice. Neither of us commented. Together we walked closer. The image covered both pages. An old drawing. Faded with age. Most of the ink had disappeared. But one figure remained visible. A woman standing beneath a crescent moon. Long dark hair. Silver markings across her skin. The artist had drawn her face poorly. Yet something about it felt familiar. Mira crouched beside the book. I stayed standing. Her eyes narrowed. "That's weird." "What is?" She pointed. The figure's face. At first I didn't understand. Then I looked again. And my stomach tightened.

Zayn pulled out a crumpled piece of paper, smoothing it out on the table. It was a drawing. Simple. Uneven lines. Bright colors. Three figures. Aira recognized it immediately. Zayn pointed at it proudly. “This is me. And that’s Mum. And… that’s you.” Lucien’s gaze fixed on the drawing. For a moment, he didn’t speak. His fingers moved slightly, as if he wanted to touch the paper but stopped himself. “And you made this?” he asked. Zayn nodded. “Yes.” Lucien’s expression didn’t change much.

She has one red jewel on her forehead - sort of Asian for a medieval European art, don't you think? She has another on her chest - like over her heart - and another on her stomach.
