Salem nuzzles into me after hearing her words. “I don’t know; I just need time.” “Let me bring you some food.” Alisha runs out and brings back a tray loaded with sausage and bacon and eggs and coffee. The other end protruded out the back of his head. Salem convulsed, his body bulging and tearing open, as though all the power he held within was exploding out. Flesh and bone became impossible to distinguish as Salem, still shrieking, combusted in a shower of red blood and white light. I dropped my sword and lay still, resting my heavy limbs. The grass was soft and wet beneath me. Crimson rain trickled down my face. I breathed, and breathed, and finally lifted my head enough to look at the ground ahead.
