Samantha I get home, slip off my shoes, and open a bottle of white wine. I need this after the day I’ve had. I went to four other job interviews after the one at Maxwell Publishing. They were all brutal. Each one had wall-to-wall women who looked like models applying for the jobs. The job market is tough right now, so I have no idea what my chances are of getting a call back. I take a seat on my couch with my glass of wine in hand. I place the glass of wine in my hand on the couch, making sure not to spill as I lie back and close my eyes.

“I’m still me.” I looked down at her hand. So small. So warm. The pulse in her wrist fluttered against my cold skin like a promise I had no right to want. “You shouldn’t touch me,” I said. “I do a lot of things I shouldn’t,” she replied. And then, because she was Samantha, she added: “Like buy cheap wine or live with vampires.” Against my will, a laugh escaped me — rough, unwilling, real. “You are impossible.” “Thanks,” she said. “It’s my best trait.”

Her life has been thing but hell. Samantha leaned forward, her gaze locked on Bianca. Bianca couldn’t maintain the eye contact and had to look down. It was already obvious that Samantha was better than her now and she can’t hold that eye contact even if she tries. The lady was intimidating. “Now tell me. What were you talking abou?” Samantha asked, curiosity etched on her features.
