“Sammy, can you tell me what you think about living with your mommy and daddy? There’s no wrong answer, okay?”
Sammy nodded, his hands clasped in his lap, and looked at me, then at Elliot, before speaking. “I love my mommy,” he began, his voice clear but trembling slightly. “She makes pancakes with smiley faces and takes me to see planes at the airport. And I love my daddy too. He teaches me soccer and does funny voices when he reads stories.” He paused, biting his lip, and my heart tightened, knowing he was choosing his words carefully. “I want to stay with both of them. I want us to be a family again, like before. I don’t want to choose.”
