The book, simply titled The Sanctuary, was published the following autumn. There was no fanfare, no national tour. We did a single reading at the local bookstore, the same one where Arthur bought his medical journals and I now browsed for mysteries. The small space was packed. Agnes from the book club was there, beaming. Betty, the retired teacher, nodded along as I read. My watercolor teacher, Anya, gave me a thumbs-up from the back.
Afterward, a young woman approached me, holding a copy of the book tightly to her chest. Her eyes were red-rimmed.
