Joel guided me to a small picnic area, where a checkered blanket had been spread out on the grass, and a basket of food was waiting. He gestured for me to sit down, his expression surprisingly gentle.
"You're probably hungry," Joel said, opening the basket to reveal sandwiches, fruit, and pastries. "I figured we could use some time to get to know each other, like you said."
