“Tucked behind the books in the library’s upper shelf. I didn’t know what it was at first. Just that it felt… wrong.” Sloane took the book with slow hands and opened it. Her heart thudded as the pages revealed themselves, it was her structure. Her phrasing. Even her signature lines. But thinner. Hollow. Like someone had drained the blood out of the bones and left the shell. She flipped to Chapter Eleven. There it was: She stepped into the dark, not knowing whether she’d be swallowed or remade. It was hers. But not. A faint note was scribbled in the margin in ink too smooth, too elegant to be hers:

I tried mindlinking Scarlet. As expected, there was no response. “Scarlet, this is our big night and I know that you’d hate both me and yourself if you missed it.” Silence. I released a sigh and turned to the side of the carriage where I could see trees and little cottages breezing by us as the driver rode. “Scarlet, come on. If this is still about Ralph. We’ll fix things after tonight. I promise, plus you know it’s the right thing to do.”

I commented absentmindedly. Scarlet shrugged, wholly unbothered, and continued to focus on her cigarette and how she puffed out the smoke. Her calm demeanor was an unsettling contrast to the utter turmoil raging inside me. "The godfather won't stand by this time," I said, then lowered my voice to a whisper, "Our plan is only a step away." We were in too deep now to turn back, whether I liked it or not. Scarlet turned to look at me, her gaze coated with pity. That might have been the most unnerving look of all.

Scarlet leaned back in her chair, exhaling slowly. She had learned her lesson two years ago. This time, she wouldn’t be so easy to break. The tides had shifted, the storm had turned, Scarlet watched as the bridges burned. Voices that once called her cold and cruel, Now whispered regrets—were they mere fools? Apologies rang, yet felt too late, Two years of pain, two years of fate. She’d lost her name, her light, her pride, Now the truth had forced the world to decide.

Scarlet what are you talking about, he treats you so well because you're his servant and nothing else don't think too highly of yourself, I kept admiring the watch that was shining so bright in my hand, what if I take this watch and run away, what I wanted was to gather money and finally leave this place, what if I take this watch and run away I can resell it and start a new life and it's not like I'm doing anything bad because he bought the watch for me, so it now belongs to me, I'm not doing anything wrong?

The bustling life outside seemed incongruent with the quiet turmoil that raged within. As I lingered at the window, the cityscape below became a metaphor for the labyrinthine emotions that entangled my heart—a complex network of hope, regret, and an unwavering determination to reunite with Evelyn.

Scarlet sat in the back of the small rowboat, rocking in the strong currents of the Hudson River, and wrapped her sweater tighter about her shoulders to ward off the cold breeze coming off the water. She had forgotten how cold the Hudson could be in November; she had also forgotten how strong the tides could be, and she braced herself against the spray, almost like waves in an ocean.

Just last week she was trying to mend their broken relationship but now? Before I knew it Skylar grabbed a hold on my colar kissing me hard. I pushed her away angrily looking at Aaron who just stood there as if not noticing what just happened. She looked over at Scarlet and I following her gaze.
