She sat back and looked at the garden and thought about the word close. Know who is close,Not know who is dangerous, Not know who to avoid,Close,as in proximity, as in these people may already be near you without you knowing it, as in by the time you recognize them it may be too late to be careful. She thought about her mother’s lunches with a man she described as a kind businessman. She thought about Claire’s nervousness at the house visit. She thought about the photograph of herself taken three days before it arrived, which meant someone had been watching the house, which meant someone had been close.

Her chest heaved as she panted, her gaze locked onto mine. Jayleen turned towards her, his eyes softening at her evident fear. His lycan-red eyes reverted back to their natural brown, concern etched across his face. "Skye, what are you doing here?" he asked, his voice barely audible in the silent night. But Skye's attention was fixated on me. Her fear was palpable, and it brought a twisted sense of pleasure to me. I reveled in the sight of her fear, in the power I held over her.
