"My legs feel like jelly." A tall man walks out of the dark alley near the big door. The man wears a sharp black suit. He has cold, dark eyes. He looks very dangerous. He has a scar on his chin. Sean stops moving his feet. His breath gets stuck deep in his throat. The scary man looks right at him. The man does not look away. He steps closer. Sean feels his stomach flip upside down. He cannot move away from the man.

Squelch-pop. I snapped my head back to the mirror. My reflection was pressed against the glass. Its hands weren't resting on the imaginary sink in its world; they were splayed against the interior surface of the mirror, the fingers white and bloodless from the pressure. Its face was inches from mine, separated only by five millimeters of silvered glass. The most terrifying part wasn't the proximity, but the expression. It wasn't my face anymore. The features were identical, yes, but the intent was a jagged, predatory hunger that I had never felt in my life.

Still, with makeup applied and dressed in a flowing red gown, I looked like a vengeful ghost returned from hell. The microphone slipped from Gariel’s hand and hit the floor, releasing a shrill screech. His eyes went wide in sheer terror, and his face drained of all color, as if he had truly seen a ghost. “Veya?” “Gariel,” I said, “you look rather disappointed to see that I’m not dead.” The last trace of blood vanished from his face. “Miss Veya!” “My god, Miss Veya is alive!” The banquet hall erupted into chaos. Voices overlapped as shock rippled through the crowd.
