STEP CLOSER, MY STEP BROTHER
she whispers, her voice shaking just a little.
“Yeah,” I answer, but my voice comes out lower than I expect.
Another step follows, closer now, and this time there’s no mistaking it. Whatever is out there is moving toward us, not away. My heart starts beating so fast it almost hurts, and I can feel it in my chest, in my ears, everywhere. I pull Isabella a little closer without thinking, my body reacting before my brain can even catch up.
“Stay close to me,” I whisper.
